3 Ways to improve your Vocabulary

vocabulary hacks

As a previous ESL Teacher in Clark Institute of the Philippines, a tenured teacher told me the three ways to improve once vocabulary bank. After learning this, surprisingly my English Vocabulary grew significantly. Learn this five ways to improve your vocabulary.

  1. Synonyms and Antonyms

Every word has its own synonyms and antonyms either for alternative spelling or more accurate information. One of my favorites is the word Problem which means “a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome ” other synonyms of this are mishap

For Antonymsit is more of the opposite of the word, note that not all opposite are being used. For example, gruntled, the opposite of disgruntled , is barely being used since the word happy can be used instead. Learning this using Thesaurus (no, it is not a dinosaur), which is a dictionary focused on antonyms and synonyms, is the best way to learn this.

  2. Prefix and Suffixes

    – A prefix is defined as a word, letter, or number placed before another. This usually serves as an indication of changes to the root word, while suffixes are morpheme added at the end of a word to form a derivative, e.g., -ation, -fy, -ing, -itis which is more of identifying the word on its word family(Grammar).   Learning this Prefixes and suffixes will definitely increase your understanding of vocabulary.

For example – Uni – means one so, Uniform  (one – Form), Unicycle  (One – Wheel)
To read more about prefixes and suffixes you can check this file I found that is really helpful.

  3. Etymology

This is far my most favorite part when it comes to learning vocabulary, the study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history.

Learning word alone is not effective compared to knowing the deeper meaning of the word.

Few examples are the word typhoon which originated in Japan or China (Tai Fung) which means strong wind. Another is Boondocks which was coined during World War 2 by Americans in the Philippines (Bundok in Filipino means Mountain) but now it is often applied to an out-of-the-way city or town considered backward and unsophisticated.

My favorite Etymology is from the word Narcissism which comes from the Greek myth about Narcissus a handsome Greek youth who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water.

Summary

In learning vocabulary, one must know its origin, the words you can put it before or after, and other ways to write or to say.

Added Bonus, during my TESOL Training in Clark Institute of the Philippines, I learned from our academic head about Collocation Dictionary which is another dictionary that gather the typical usage of the word or phrase. Check Cambridge Collocation Dictionary

EOP Speech: I am a Quitter and that is Okay.

Do you want to quit?

I was able to work for Microsoft, Amazon Kindle, T-Mobile, Clearwire, and FMTrader. Then I tried to partner up to work in a startup company and even work here at Clark Institute of the Philippines.  All of this jobs… I quit, not because of management or politics but because I am not happy.

Steve Job once said that “I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

It is believed that being a quitter is bad, but it turns out that it is okay to be quitter. Some reasons might be different but it all boils down to this.

  1. Quit something if you are no longer happy – Life is not a comforting mother, she will hustle and beat you to death. Enjoy your life .I worked for Microsoft Zune and I hated every single day of my life so I decided to quit and try to find my happiness. If I didn’t quit this job I will never I find the love of my life. Now we are together for five years with our legendary.
  1. Quitting is not same as lazy – People keep saying to work hard and harder to be successful. No, this is not true. When you know you work hard and they feel you need to give more, then quit. They are just abusing and using you. I have worked for 7 days a week and still demand more so I decided to quit and now this company employs 5 people for my job.
  1. Quitting is Learning – Yes, even in quitting you can learn things. I started to work in CIP around 2013 and I decided to quit at this company in 2015 because I was looking for a better salary (going back to Microsoft ) So I decided to leave and then I have learned that teaching is something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Now I am talking in front of you to tell this. It is okay to quit, quit if you are no longer happy, quit and NEVER think you are lazy. Quit so you can learn. See you on Monday.

IELTS Writing Task 2 (No Score Yet)

Some people think that getting a degree fro university is the best way to guarantee a good job, others believe that it would be better to go straight to work and get experience instead. Discuss both sides and give your opinion

Discuss both sides and give your opinion

We stand in awe when we found out that our security guard was a licensed engineer but he never got a job in the field due to lack of experience in Engineering. Today, it is often said that getting a job immediately is better in order to acquire all experience, while other still believe that getting a degree will assure one’s success in finding a good paying job.  In my opinion, having both experience in a field of industry and a diploma will assure your faith in getting a decent job.

Today, applying for a service crew position requires a college level.  This shows that the requirements set by the employers are getting higher hence, getting a degree will always have an advantage compare to others. My experience before in the call center industry shows that educational background matter. When we were in the final interview to be a supervisor, they based it on performance and tenure. Hence, the manager decided to choose the candidate based on our academic credential. Therefore, academic achievement is important.

Jumping to work immediately in order to get experience is considered as a leap of faith. For some workers who were able to acquire a job and gain experience can be considered as lucky.  Most people who do this have already portfolio or some prior mentorship experience before they even apply for a job. During my younger years, going to a tech shop and ask for some electronic kit and do computer troubleshooting are considered to be my hobby. One day, I was hired by a local shop because I am already accustomed to the process that they feel I should be paid. Hence, going to career ladder in order to get experience is not for everyone and prior experience should be acquired.

To summarize, having a good academic background will give applicants a clear path in getting a job and experience will fast forward to your goal. Hence, both of these two essential factors works hand in hand, and trying to focus on one area alone is futile.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Opinion (Band 9)

Technology allows food to be produced in greater quantities and at the lower prices. Some people believe this is a positive development, while others feel that the change is harmful. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

There are different opinion in regard to the question of whether modern machinery and applied chemistry should be used in agriculture. While some people think that this allows farmers to grow more food of the highest quality, others argue that following such an approach pose a threat to everyone’s health and may have a dramatic effect on ecosystems. The debate over this question seems to consist of two irreconcilable poles. Both side of the arguments will be analyzed before a logical conclusion is drawn and my own perspective is given.

There are several apparent benefits of using the latest technology in food industry. In the first place, this allows to produce rich harvest since the growth of cereals, fruits and vegetables is stimulated. As a result, the majority of growing population do not suffer from famine. Moreover, genetically modified foods may be eminently nutritious. For example, I prefer GM tomatoes because they contain more ferrum.

In spite of these      considerations       , the advantages of agro-industrial technology are outweighed by several drawbacks. Food which is produced quickly with the help of pesticides may contain chemicals harmful to humans. From my knowledge, some fertilizers used in Russia have not been tested for safety yet. Beside this, food chains may be broken if crops are resistant to insects. Consequently, some species may become extinct in the near future.

In conclusion, my opinion is that both sides of the argument over whether benefits of using modern technology in farming and production compensate for the drawbacks have merit. However, after analyzing the opposing camps, my personal view is that the people should aim to organic farming. This is because it is more natural and certainly safer than artificial stimulation of food production.
